Tulle is available in a wide variety of colors; pick one or more colors to make your tutu with.
Whether it is for a ballet recital or simply to dress up around the house, many little girls enjoy wearing frilly tutus and hair accessories. With some basic sewing knowledge, you can easily custom design an adorable tutu and matching hair bow for a special little girl in your life. Tulle is the standard material used for tutus and will make a nice, puffy skirt, however, any other material may be substituted to create a different style of tutu.
Instructions
Making Your Tutu
1. Measure around the waist of the child that the tutu is for. Subtract 2 to 3 inches from this measurement. Cut a piece of elastic waistband to match this measurement.
2. Sew the two ends of the elastic waistband together, forming a loop.
3. Cut your tulle into strands of 6-by-24 inches. Gather each section of tulle in the middle, folding it in half. Then, slip knot it around the elastic waistband. Continue adding strips of tulle all the way around the waistband. Puff out the tulle to cover any spaces between strips.
4. Cut a strand of ribbon and tie it into a bow. Sew the bow overtop where you attached the two ends of waistband together to hide any unsightly stitching.
Hair Bows
5. Measure and cut a 14-inch strand of ribbon. Fold your ribbon in half.
6. Open your snap clip. Place on small dab of glue on the point of the clip and attach the ribbon at the fold in the middle. Wrap the ribbon around and through the middle of the clip. Continue wrapping until you have worked you way around the entire clip. Glue the ends of the ribbon in behind the top half of the clip.
7. Measure and cut a 6-inch strand of ribbon. Tie this strand into a bow. Place a dab of glue on the non-pointy end of your hairclip and attach the bow.
