History

The Italian charm bracelet does not have a clasp, instead it stretches to allow it to be put on and removed. The starter bracelet is made up of 18 flat silver links. The wearer replaces the starter links with charm links to personalize the bracelet.
European charm bracelets are made of individual charms and beads are strung directly on a thick silver bracelet. These are also known as add a bead bracelets, and allow the wearer to personalize the bracelet by adding charms and beads.
Function
Charms have had a place in every religion and culture. Some charms, especially in Roman times, were used as status symbols. Charms have been worn to show family lineage or even profession.
Fish charms, symbolic of the Fisher of Men, Jesus Christ, have been worn by Christians. Charms that held tiny copies of Jewish scriptures have been worn by Jews. Religious charms such as these were used as a constant reminder of a person's faith.
Considerations
Charms are often added to the bracelet to record special events in the wearer's life, such as birthdays, marriage, graduation, childbirth and similar important milestones. Charms are also added to acknowledge a skill such as a sports or musical accomplishment.
