Check The Engine Light In A Kia Sportage

The Sportage has been manufactured by Kia since 1993. It is a compact SUV manufactured by the Korean automaker. You can check the engine light on your Kia Sportage right from home, saving yourself a trip to the dealer. The Kia illuminates the Check Engine light on your instrument panel when the On-Board Diagnostics computer detects an error code sent to it from one of the sensors in the engine or emissions system. You can find out what the Check Engine light means by purchasing an OBD code scanner from an auto parts store. This code scanner reads the codes, and tells you exactly what is wrong with the vehicle.

Instructions

1. Put the key into the ignition, and turn it to the On position, taking care not to start the engine.

2. Locate the diagnostic port on the driver's side dashboard near the steering column. Plug the OBD code scanner into this port. Wait for it to power on. If it doesn't, look for an On/Off' switch on the scanner, and turn it on.

3. Select the Read Codes command from the menu. Wait for the scanner to display the codes.

4. Write the codes on a piece of paper, and look up their meanings in the OBD code scanner manual. Some scanners actually display the code and its meaning right on the face of the scanner.

5. Unplug the scanner, and turn off the vehicle.

Tips Warnings

Some codes on your Sportage are specific to Kia and won't be listed in the manual for the scanner. In this case, you can find Kia-specific codes at OBD-Codes.com (see Resource).
