The Microsoft Zune is a personal media player capable of music and video playback, as well as Internet browsing (in the HD series of models.) However, to get any functionality from your Zune, it must be connected to a computer with the Zune software installed. Several issues can arise during the loading and setup of the Zune software; fortunately, many can be corrected using simple troubleshooting steps.
Two Microsoft Zunes.
Freezing
If your Zune software locks up or freezes during installation, there is probably a lack of virtual memory. This shortage occurs when your processor has been overloaded and has run out of RAM. To help ease the strain, cancel the install and exit some of your computer's processes that are unnecessary. These processes can include web browsers, anti-virus software and other media applications. Once you have closed all unnecessary processes, try the installation again.
Refusal to Update
It is common for Zune to recommend a software update periodically when you are loading it. However, if you try to confirm that you want to update the software now, and the Zune software does not respond, try downloading the update manually and then loading it into your Zune offline. Download the software package, install it and plug in your Zune (see link in Resources).

Components Cannot Be Installed
If, during the initial download of the Zune software, you get a message saying that certain components cannot be downloaded, then there could be one of two problems causing the issue. First, there may be insufficient space on your hard drive for the software. If this is the case, delete content for the Zune software to finish installing. The second issue that could be causing this is that your version of windows is not up to date. Zune software requires Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher to operate. If you do not meet minimum system requirements, you will need to upgrade before using your Zune.
Media Content Will Not Play
If you have media content that will not play in the Zune software, then you likely have files that are corrupted. These files will either need to be converted using a formatter or will need to be deleted from the Zune software. These files will not load onto the Zune device and may prevent other files from loading onto the device, so it is important to take care of them as soon as possible.
