TomTom is a digital navigation company that focuses on navigation software for vehicles. They are famous for their TomTom software which has almost become a recognizable and popular brand name. TomTom makes navigation software for vehicles as a portable device, in-dash unit, for PDA and smartphones, and even for bikes. History
TomTom, originally Palmtop, was founded by Harold Goddijn, Peter-Frans Pauwels, and Pieter Geelen. In 2001, when the name was changed to TomTom, the company only had 30 employees. In 2006, TomTom WORK and TomTom Mobility Solutions were launched and the company's employees had grown to 818. In 2008 TomTom acquired Tele Atlas.
Routing Functions
TomTom software can give customers fast calculations on route planning, fuel prices, Google search options, and fast and accurate positioning. Text-to-speech is also available. Voice command and control is also available and the small screens are usually easy to operate and plug in. The touchscreens are high quality and it comes with safety alerts, quality visual instructions, sound and connections.
Mapping
TomTom Go devices come with the latest and most complete maps of Europe, US and Canada preinstalled. They can also be edited so that individual users can make corrections to the map as they see fit. TomTom devices provide detailed maps of many Eastern and Western European countries, but give users in Canada and the US the most complete and accurate map ever released.
TomTom for Windows Mobile
The TomTom software for Windows Mobile is designed to be used with a pocket PC or Windows Mobile computer. They are also intended for use with GPS receivers and Bluetooth GPS receivers. The newest version is Navigator 7, which updates previous technology and improves a number of features like mapping, addresses, and other enhancements.
TomTom LIVE
TomTom has many services that work in countries outside the US due to finding an appropriate carrier partner, but with the unit, features like Google Local search, gas prices and weather data can be accessed. Features like speech recognition and commands have also been added. The unit should be available in 2009 at the estimated price of $499. It also comes with a year subscription to TomTom LIVE services. Although it is missing HD Traffic, it expects to have it by the end of its year subscription.
