Use Media Card Readers

A media card reader (also called a memory card reader) is a USB (Universal Serial Bus) device with multiple slots that accommodate a variety of sizes of removable media cards. Used to store data files, media cards can typically be found in cell phones, digital cameras and handheld multimedia players. Media card readers come in two types: internal (installed permanently in a laptop or desktop computer and connected to the motherboard internally) or external (plugged into a USB port on the outside of the computer).

Instructions

1. Remove the media card from its portable electronic device. Check the device for a label indicating the type of media card. Common types include SD, MiniSD, MicroSD, MMC, MS, MSD, CF, and MicroDrive.

2. Locate the media card slots on the media card reader. A label above or below each slot indicates which card types are compatible with which slots. A match between the media card and its slot must be made in order to use the media card with the media card reader.

3. Plug the media card reader into your computer's USB port, if necessary. Insert the media card reader drivers' disc into the computer and click "Install" to install the drivers for the card reader. Restart the computer to complete the installation.

4. Insert the media card into the appropriately labeled slot in the card reader, pushing in until it is firmly seated in the slot. A message indicating that the card is detected will appear in the bottom-right corner of the desktop, followed by a window displaying available options for the detected card.

5. Click "Open folder to view files" to open the media card contents in a window. The card functions in much the same way as a hard drive installed in the computer and is assigned a drive letter.

6. Drag and drop files between the media card window and your computer's hard drive. When finished transferring data, double-click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the notification area of the task bar. Click to select the media card from the list, then click the "Stop" button.

7. Remove the card from the media card reader by pressing the eject tab or gripping the edge of the card with your fingertips and pulling it out.
