moen-faucet-cartridge-replacement-instructions

Installing a Moen Magnum cartridge will increase your shower faucets performance.

Hard water and scale buildup in a Moen faucet cartridge will make it difficult to pull out and shut off. There are Moen cartridge repair kits; however, you are better off replacing the whole cartridge. New plastic Moen cartridges, referred to as Magnums, resist hard water scale build up and make the best choice for replacement. The new cartridges are easy for anyone to install. The repair should only take about an hour for the experienced do-it-yourselfer.

Instructions

1. Shut off the faucet’s water supply under the sink or out at the meter. Open the faucet to alleviate the back pressure.

2. Pop the index button out of the center of the faucet handle with a flat tip screwdriver.

3. Remove the handle screw with a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

4. Pull the handle off the cartridge stem by hand.

5. Slide the metal cartridge cover off the faucet by hand.

6. Pull the cartridge-retaining pin out of the faucet with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

7. Insert the white plastic cartridge tool by hand. Rotate the tool back and forth with a crescent wrench several times to loosen the cartridge.

8. Attach the Moen cartridge-pulling tool to the Moen faucet cartridge, and then pull the cartridge out of the faucet.

9. Apply a thin layer of silicone lubricant to the outside of the Moen faucet cartridge and insert it into the faucet body.

10. Reinstall the retaining pin, sleeve and handle. Turn the water back on and check for leaks.

Tips Warnings

Always use the plastic cartridge-aliening tool that comes with each new Moen cartridge.

You can break the inside out of the old cartridge.
