Top-down and bottom-up shades provide you with convenience of looking outside your window from the top or bottom part of the frame. These shades come with strings to operate the movement of the window accessory. In case the string gets broken, you can replace it with a new one and restring the shades. While you can hire a specialist to restring the shades for you, it can serve as a good maintenance practice to do the restringing yourself.
Instructions
1. Remove the end caps from the bottom rail of the shades and one end cap of the top rail. Take out the cord lock from the same rail so you can remove all the caps that may prevent you from taking out the original string.
2. Slide the bottom and top rails to reveal the cords inside the shades. You should see the cords inside the shades after sliding off both rails.
3. Measure the right amount of string to use. Calculate the length needed by multiplying the window's height by 2 and adding the width of the shades plus 12 inches. Use a measuring tape to obtain accurate dimensions.
4. Remove the old string from the shades and place its washers aside to use when installing the new string.
5. Insert the new string into the shades using a threading needle to pull the cords right through the string. Use the washers from the original cord to tie off the new cords and prevent them from pulling through.
6. Slide the top and bottom rail back onto the shade and thread the new string into the lock of the cord. Reinsert the lock back into the top rail.
7. Reinstall your end caps at the bottom rail and the other end cap on the shades' top rail.
