Replace Rear Shocks On A Ford Escape 2001

The Escape's shock absorbers dampen the bounching action of traveling over uneven roadways.

Ford equipped the 2001 model-year Escapes with cylindrical rear shock absorbers. The shock absorbers act as dampeners, reducing the bouncing action created when the car travels over uneven road surfaces. When shock absorbers leak or wear out, they no longer provide adequate cushioning, and the Escape rides rough. If shock components break, the vehicle produces rattling noises. Inspect the shocks for leaks. If leaks are apparent or if rough riding suggests that the shocks are worn out, replace them as a pair.

Instructions

1. Remove screws holding the rear quarter trim panel in place. Remove the panel and set it aside.

2. Remove the shock absorber's upper nut with a wrench.

3. Raise the rear of the Escape with the jack until the suspension is no longer under a load, and support the vehicle with jack stands.

4. Remove the shock absorber's lower nut with a wrench. Remove the shock absorber.

5. Reverse the procedure to install the new shock absorber. Torque the lower bolt to 85 foot-pounds with the torque wrench. Torque the upper bolt to 13 foot-pounds with the torque wrench.

Tips Warnings

The procedure, as given, is for replacing the shock absorber on one side of the car only. Repeat the procedure for the other side.

If power components are mounted to the rear quarter panel, disconnect the battery's negative cable before removing the panel.
