Shorten Levolor Window Blinds

Levolor manufacturers an extensive line of window treatments including custom blinds. When moving from house to another, you might find that your blind is too long for the window. Although you can just not lower the blind all the way, you can also shorten the Levolor window blinds to meet the needs of the window. Shortening blinds requires removing the unnecessary slats.

Instructions

1. Lower the window blinds fully with the pull cord on the right side. Turn the tilt wand counterclockwise to open the blinds so the the blind slats are horizontal.

2. Place a piece of tape on the slat that is even with the top of the window sill. Go to the slat that is the second one down from the one you place the tape.

3. Cut the ladder under the slat with a pair of scissors. The ladder is the braided cord that the slat rests on when open and is between the two vertical cords. Cut all the ladders under the slat. The slats will lower down to the bottom rail when you cut these ladder cords.

4. Measure 6 inches down from the new bottom slat with a tape measure and cut the vertical lift cords with a pair off scissors. Hold the bottom rail as you cut all the lift cords. Set the bottom rail with the disconnected slats on the floor.

5. Slide the bottom two slats on the Levolor blind out from between their ladders. This gives you the string necessary to reattach the bottom rail.

6. Turn the bottom rail over so that you can see the plastic plugs securing the strings. Pry the plastic plugs out of the bottom rail with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the bottom rail from the rest of the removed slats.

7. Insert the bottom rail into the upper ladders left by the previous slat on the blind hanging in the window. Pull the lift cord strings out of the lower ladder. The lift cord strings are the outer strings that run up and down the front and back of the blinds. Insert the end of the lift cord string through the hole on the side of the bottom rail near each ladder.

8. Flip the bottom rail on so that the bottom is facing you and pull the ends of each lift cord through the bottom holes of the rail where the plastic plugs install. Tie the ends of the lift cords together and cut off any excess.

9. Press the plastic plugs into the holes on the bottom of the rail to secure the pull cord to the rail.

Tips Warnings

Keep the slats that were removed as spares to replace damaged slats.
