Classic stuck cartridge in moen faucet problem...old faucet with lots of calcium
HI there everyone, So I am trying to get the stuck cartridge out of the moen faucet (sink), and of course that little plastic that moen gives is useless. I dont have a puller....do I really need it to pull out the cartridge? Yes I did take the horseshow keeper out... I turned the sucker 90 deg back and forth and tried yanking at the stem...still not coming out...... Lots of calcium, is it true that vinegar eradicates it? Thanks for the help Did you use that plastic white cubey tool correctly? I have changed out many scores of Moen cartridges over the years. After I almost cold-clocked myself once in the face by yanking on the stem with a vicegrips and it finally yanked free, I have since used that tool to my success everytime. And yes, they, like yours, were stuck. I would get another tool. But if not, use a vice grips on the stem and be prepared for that thing to suddenly release out of there!. Often I thread back in partially the handle screw so I can lock the vicegrips around it, then yank. You can try any lime buster or even penetrating oil if you have time and patience, as I have a feeling it be hard going getting all around those 2 wide rubber side pieces on the cartridge. thanks for the reply ok that cartridge is stuck in there like a fat foetus in a pregnant vagina. the plastic cube tool turns the cartridge, but yank all you want it wont budge much. I even put a little flat screwdriver wedged in between the plastic outer cover of the cartridge and moved it up a few millimetres. after a while some parts of the upper plastic covering broke off. im thinking whether a puller is worth it........and even calcium remover wont help much as where am I gonna put it? the cartridege just covers the entire opening.... You need to eat your Wheaties. Because.......... ....if you turned the cartridge some with the cube, that means you have broken the side seals loose that are sticking the cartridge side gaskets to the brass inside. That means it HAS TO be able to pull out now. No ifs ands or buts. I know how these things are made. I have x-ray vision of them. I even dismantle (by removing the inner core) them so I can replace o-rings and grease, sometimes, in an emergency. And if plastic has broken(probably from the top area where the cube goes against, I bet), so be it. Just tug more, and the stem should pull out. It really should. I live where some toilets here lime up with so much scale you need an atomic bomb to get it off, yet I have never been stymied from getting off many many Moen cartridges whether they are the pull and turn type, or the turn only Posi-temp ones. Be careful going to the extreme with a torch. You could send molten plastic and rubber down where you cannot get it out. And permanently discolor the chrome fixture. buddy i eat quaker oats I yanked that cartridege as hard as I could (te basin was even coming out) its tight man.......real tight..... should I use a puller? HOW DO I USE A PULLER? Well the puller would both have to have the ability to push down on the faucet and raise up the stem. It be the opposite of what a faucet handle puller does. That pushes down on the stem while it grabs the handle from the underside and lifts up. You have to have these counteracting forces with a puller. I'm not even sure how they could design one for a Moen, since everything in that hole has to come out. That means the counteracting downward force would have to be pushing down on what material is left around the rim that the cartridge goes in. You could always get some person to stand on the sink while you made an attempt to pull that cartridge out. You say you already broke the bond by rotating it some with the cube. right? If you really did, it should pull out. And there really should be no plastic debris that got lodged down in there either, to be causing your problem. Did you truly break the bond by getting that cube to rotate that stem some? When done correctly, that cube rotates AND starts to lift the stem out! You have to push down hard on the cube, while turning it, so you do not buger up the top of the cartridge.
