Repair A Whirlpool Washing Machine Agitator

You can easily repair the Whirlpool washing machine agitator with the agitator repair kit.

The Whirlpool washing machine is a quality appliance that will last you many years. Despite the quality, there are parts that will wear with normal use. When they wear or break, you will need to replace them, or call in a technician. You can perform most repairs on the washing machine yourself however, and avoid paying high labor charges for someone to come to your house. The agitator on the Whirlpool washing machine consists of two parts. The bottom rotates back and forth, while the top half works with a ratcheting motion. The most common problem with the agitator is that the top stops working and does not push the clothes back down into the tub, as it should.

Instructions

1. Unplug the Whirlpool washing machine from its power source. Never attempt to service an appliance when it still has power to it. Remove the rinse dispenser from the agitator by squeezing the ring at the bottom of it and lifting it out of the washing machine. Some models may not have the locking ring and you will simply pull it off the agitator.

2. Remove the top cap from the agitator using a flathead screwdriver. Remove the dust cap from inside the agitator by lifting it out. Remove the agitator bolt and washer using a socket, socket wrench and a long extension. Pull up on the agitator to remove it from the washing machine.

3. Set the agitator on the floor. Place your feet on the bottom of it to hold it in place and pull firmly on the top section to separate the two pieces. Turn the top half over in your hand and allow the old cam to slide out of the agitator. Open the agitator repair kit and insert the new directional cogs into the new cam. The directional cogs look like dog-ears.

4. Slide the black retainer ring onto the cam to log the directional cogs in place. Push down on the retaining ring until you feel it snap into place on the cam. Place the new cam assembly into the top half of the agitator. Line the slots on the top of the agitator with the tabs in the bottom half. Push down firmly on the top half to snap it on the lower half.

5. Insert the agitator in the washing machine on the driveshaft. Install the bolt and washer on the agitator and tighten it using a socket, ratchet and long extension. Replace the dust into the top of the agitator over the bolt and washer. Snap the cap on the agitator. Install the rinse dispenser on the agitator. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
