anyone recommend Zinsser Quick 15?
Hello everyone. I've been lurking for quite some time and thought I'd finally come out of the wood work... pun intended! I am hoping someone out there has used Zinsser's Quick 15. I've tried to find some info about this product other than the standard press release which is always the same thing - Zinsser Quick 15 is a fast-drying alkyd varnish that is excellent for interior use on all woods, cabinets, doors, trim, and metal. It dries in 15 minutes to a hard, durable finish; 3 coats can be applied in one day. QUICK-15 is easy to apply using brush or sprayer and is a great all-purpose clear finish for both contractors and DIY users. That's about all I've been able to find on this product and I'd really like to know if any of you have tried it and what you thought of it. Thanks for any info you can give me. Welcome to the forums! I've not used that particular coating but I've never used any Zinnser coating that didn't do a good job [providing it was the right coating for the job] I would be leery of applying a varnish with a brush that dries that quickly. It might be hard to work with because of how fast it sets up. I've added japan drier to varnish and oil base paints in the past to speed up drying time [especially in cool/damp weather] but even then it wasn't dry in 15 minutes. What is your specific need/use for this coating? Hi there marksr! I plan to strip and refinish all the trim work in my house. I realized after I had posted this question that it probably should have gone under the refinishing thread. But basically I'm looking for a finish coat that's fairly simple to apply if there is such a thing. I'm debating whether to use Zinsser's Quick 15 or polymerized tung oil. I just can't find anyone who has used this particular Zinsser product. Thanks for the follow-up! I've varnished a lot of woodwork over the years but the majority of it's been new construction. I prefer to use sanding sealer for the first 1-2 coats and then varnish for the last coat or two. I generally purchase my coatings at the local paint store [not paint dept] because they always have a good selection of quality coatings. A quick dry sanding sealer can be beneficial because of the quick recoat time, although multiple coats usually slows down the drying time. I like sanding sealer because it sands easier than varnish/poly. Using varnish for a top coat gives a harder, longer wearing finish. Poly has a stronger finish than varnish but most polys aren't compatible with sanding sealer. Quick drying is beneficial on the first coat or two but can be problematic on the final coat. A slower drying varnish has more time to flow together and is less likely to show lap marks or brush marks. Thanks for the info. I'll consider doing that. I've been using Zinsser Quick 15 for at least 6 years. I finished a bunch of doors with HVLP sprayer and was able to put about 5 thin coats on the whole bunch in one day. Definitely saved lots of time and the finish holds up real well. This was for a commercial (retail store) application. I use the satin product. I have recently been recoating over polyurethane with brush in my house. I fill nail holes, sand, steel wool, then use tack rag before brushing on the finish. I wait at least one hour between coats and put 3 coats on the doors and trim. The finish flows nicely, very few runs. Much easier than waiting 24 hours between coats with polyurethane and I think the finish is just as good. I highly recommend the product! Good luck with your project! in the eighties I had a carpentry business. Mostly bookshelves and cabinets. Quick-15 was recommended to me by a local hardware store in Manhattan. It was one of the best discoveries I ever made when it came to finishing furniture. It has the same pluses as polyurethane. You can set a wet glass on a finished project and it won't leave a ring. And the fact that you can apply 3 coats in one day is a godsend for utilization of time. I discovered that best way to avoid brush strokes was to apply Quick-15 with a sponge brush. And make sure, if you use a stain, that it is totally dried before applying Quick-15. Hi, I'm newto the forum, 2 weeks ago I had stained a new sliding glass door in my house and wanted to seal it with a good sealer. I asked around and was told to contact a painter hear in town. He told me about Quick-15 and how good it was. I said seelng is beleiving, so he took me to 3 differant jobs he had done. 3 to 5 years ago. They were just like they had been done a few months ago. I wanted to buy some, but he said a few years ago he bought it in 5 gal. pails. He has since had to buy it from the internet. He was nice enough to give me about a pint and told me use it. I lightly sanded it with 180 grit paper, wiped it down, foam brush and went to work. In an hour it was dry, I waited a coupleof hours and lightly sanded again. Make along story short, 3 coats 5-6 hours. Great finish. NOW my delema, I do not like to order off the internet. Does any one know where I can buy Quick-15. I live in Newark, N.Y. I have other projects I want to do and I don't want to bother the person that gave me the stuff again. Thanks Welcome to the forums dmiller36! You might try contacting Zinnser. They ought to be able to give you a list of stores that carry their coatings in your area. Hard to say if they will carry that particular coating though. Most any dealer should be able to special order the Quick-15 if they don't stock it..... but it might be cheaper to order it yourself
