Silhouettes can be purposely created to give your window a special funky feel.
Window treatments do not have to be limited to curtains, shades or blinds. The windows are yours, and the treatment you give them should make a statement about you rather than a statement about the company you purchased them from. Creativity does not even have to replace functionality; you can have an imaginative window treatment that keeps out the harsh rays of the sun or provides warmth from the very same star.
Plant Shelf
Plants can be come a funky window treatment when showcased on a shelf hanging from the curtain rod. Choose a funky type of rope from which to hang the shelves, like leather or vinyl or a rope with big knots that ties a boat to the dock. Don't be afraid to go wild with color when you pick out your plants. While plants that drape down are a natural fit, you should let your imagination guide you in color choices as well.
Hula Skirt
A grass hula skirt can be brought into the action as a window treatment that helps highlight a room decorated in tropical paradise style. If you have wicker furniture or bamboo anything, a simple grass Hawaiian skirt will make an ideal window treatment.
Silhouettes
Ask someone to trace a silhouette of your head, neck and shoulders out of black paper or cardboard, and glue the result to the window. From the outside it may even be good enough to fool a potential burglar. You also may like the treatment so much that you come up with creative silhouette ideas for all the windows where privacy isn't a concern.
Faux View
If you don't like the view that your window looks out upon, make your own or have a talented artist make it for you. You can make your own view by cutting out a landscape portrait inside a magazine that you glue to the window. An even better idea if you can afford it is to have an artist paint the view of your choice directly into the window.
Frosted and Etched Glass
You can purchase frosted glass spray paint from any home supply store. Buy some stencils or make them yourself and transform any boring window into a decorative showcase window. Reverse how stenciling is usually accomplished by masking the areas around the design to create the look of a design that has been etched into the glass, according to the editors of Windows with Style.
Painted Blinds
You can paint Venetian or vertical blinds to give your window treatment a look of something besides plastic or wood. Customize your blinds to match your existing decor by using the same colors that you paint into the blinds. You can even match your blinds to the dominant texture inside your room by using painting techniques to achieve the look of marble, denim, leather or metal.
