Garage doors come in many sizes and looks!
Garage doors have been getting bigger because cars have been getting bigger, too. SUVs and trucks require wider garage door sizes than a mid-size car. Luckily, garage-door manufacturers can accommodate these larger vehicles, even in double-car garage sizes. Although most manufacturers offer the same standard garage door sizes, a few have their own standards for particular models. If you can't find the correct standard garage door size with one brand, find out what other companies have to offer.
Golf Cart Doors
The most common sizes for golf cart doors are 5 by 7 feet, 6 by 7 feet, 5 by 8 feet and 6 by 8 feet. If your opening is a little shy of these standard heights, you can buy doors from a foot to three inches shorter. For example, if you need a 5-foot width and 6-foot height, that is available. Likewise, if you need a 6-foot width but a 7-foot 9-inch height, you can find that in a standard door.
Single Car Doors
Standard single-car garage doors come in 8 by 7 feet, 9 by 7 feet, 10 by 7 feet, and 8 by 8 feet, 9 by 8 feet and 10 by 8 feet. You can also buy garage doors in the standard width but from a foot to three inches shorter.
Double Car Doors
Double-car garage doors are sold in standard sizes of 12 by 7 feet, 14 by 7 feet, 16 by 7 feet, 18 by 7 feet, and 12 by 8 feet, 14 by 8 feet, 16 by 8 feet and 18 by 8 feet. As with the other standard garage door sizes, you can buy double garage doors in standard widths but shorter heights. For example, a 14-foot-wide door is available in 6-feet to 6-feet 9-inches height.
Exceptions
Some manufacturers don't offer any doors in a 7-feet, 3-inch size because of the way the doors are configured. Also, you might not be able to buy an 18-foot-wide door if you live in a high-wind zone. There are three such zones, in Florida and Texas. Garage doors used in those zones must comply with local building codes. In these instances, automatic roller garage doors or sliding garage doors might be useful as well as increased garage door insulation.
Determining the Right Size
Measure the width of the opening, and then measure the height. Standard garage door sizes are always given in width first, then height. If you're still unsure about the size you need, call a dealer and ask for a free estimate. The dealer will measure the opening to determine the correct size. There are several options available for both standard and custom sizes beyond traditional roller garage doors, including sliding garage doors and automatic roller garage doors.
