LPNs learn the basics of bedside care.
If you are considering getting into the health-care field, but aren't ready for the more rigorous registered nurse (RN) classes, several private schools in the Washington area offer programs that will enable you to become a Licensed Practical Nurse or LPN. This coursework usually takes about a year and upon graduation will enable you to work under the supervision of a doctor or an RN in settings including a hospital, doctor's office or a nursing home.
VMT Education Center
In the VMT practical nursing program, you will learn the basics of bedside care, including taking vital signs, giving and recording medications and tracking all treatments. The school is located near a Metro stop and includes four classrooms and two clinical labs where patient care is simulated for hands-on experience. A library and resource center with computers are available for student research. VMT will also assist you with job placement, once you've passed the appropriate NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing) exam for certification. VMT is approved by the District of Columbia Board of Nursing.
