Interior door sweeps gap at botom of doors to floor

Interior Door Sweeps? (Gap at botom of doors to floor)

Hello, Our house is approximately 2 years old. We have all hardwood or tile floors. All of our plain Jane cheapo 6 panel pre-hung interior doors have a ~.75-1.0 gap between the door bottom and the floor. I'm no expert but I'm assuming it is a built in design clearance by the door manufacturer for carpet clearance? I have installed doors in my basement projects etc. and always trimmed these pre-hung style doors for a closer fit to the floor. Unfortunately we never thought to question the builder when our house was built about the excessive gap. Sound seems to travel under the doors with ease and they can be quite drafty depending on location in our house as well. Anyway....Is there a door sweep or something I can buy to close this gap? I have looked at Lowe's and searched some on-line but can't find anything that is not too tacky looking. Thanks. FF Hi. The gap is for return air to your furnance. Woodbutcher Your doors are probably hollow. That's more than likely the cause of the noise traveling through. Understand air return though he doors remain open most of the time except for the spare bedroom. Probably......I've never had the luxury of owning a home with solid interior doors. When I place a roiled towel at the base of the door the sound is muted substantially. I guess it is what it is. Thanks. Most ad-on door bottoms are 1-3/4 thick - to accomodate a standard exterior door. These are 'U' shaped. There is one on the market that is 'L' shaped and would work in your situation. Interior doors aren't meant to seal. Did the builder put wood door saddles under the doors? That would make up 5/8. Marble saddles can be put under the doors on the tiled floors. The tile butts right up to the hardwood...no saddle or transition piece. My wife has been complaining about the tinkling or puttering noises periodically coming from the hall bathroom easily heard while sitting in the den! (the bath door is across from the entry way to Den) We put a towel down to see if it makes a difference (which it did). She also is easily disturbed by my son (who is a night owl) and his bedroom is down the hall from ours. (he is yet to complain of the snoring that may float under our door!) I am oblivious to all of these noises except one.......my wifes complaining! We weren't looking to make anytihg air tight (lord knows this house isn't) but something that might decrease the gap that might block sound a bit. Maybe a good quality solid or foam filled? door for the bathroom might be a good investment. We'll see. thaks for the feedback. FF
