When those Halloween parties or other costumed occassions arrive on your calendar, try putting together a pirate costume to liven up the party. Men and women both alike will have a blast as they walk around bellowing pirate slang and plundering their share of food and drink. To dress like a pirate follow these basic guidelines.
Instructions
For Ye Lads
1. Get an oversized tri-corner hat a la Captain Jack Sparrow, worn over a long scarlet sash tied around the forehead. Or sport a skull embellished do-rag around your head.
2. Find a long sleeved shirt in white or black that laces up at the neck. Make sure it also has a nice ruffled neck and sleeves.
3. Fasten a wide belt around your waist with an appropriately large buckle. A wide sash tied around the waist works as well.
4. Pair your ruffled shirt and belt with a pair of black or black striped pants. Either straight legged or baggy will work, as long as you can tuck them into your boots.
5. Complete your ensemble with a pair of black or dark brown leather knee-high boots with a top that folds over.
6. Top it all off with a long weatherworn dark leather coat, or simply relish in the fabulous pirate look you have created sans coat.
For Ye Lasses
7. Follow the general guidelines above for shirt, hat and boots. Shirts, however, should have even more ruffles, hats should have lace and bows to distinguish them from the men's, of course, and boots should be taller and perhaps even lace up.
8. Strap a lace up corset on over your shirt. Fabric works, although leather is better for the true pirate lass.
9. Find a long gypsy inspired skirt with an asymmetrical jagged hem line or a short flouncy skirt with a leather overlay. Real women wear pants as well, though. After all, it is more difficult to plunder or scrub the deck in a skirt.
10. Tie a lacy scarf around your neck or use a simple piece of leather as a choker.
