get-air-out-of-water-pipes-in-the-home

Turn on all your faucets to get air out of water pipes.

Air locks (or bubbles) in your water pipes can occur after a temporary interruption in water pressure from a municipal water supply or replacement of a burned-out water well pump. Air may also get trapped in the plumbing after a new pipe section or joint is installed. When air enters your plumbing, you may feel it coming from the faucet, accompanied by a loud banging sound that can be heard throughout the house (this is called the Water Hammer Effect). You don't need to call a plumber to get air out of your home's water pipes.

Instructions

1. Locate every water faucet outlet in your home. This includes bathtubs, showers, bathroom sinks, the water dispenser on your refrigerator, toilets, outdoor faucets and any other water outlets connected to your home water mains.

2. Choose any one of the faucets or spigots, and turn on both the hot and cold water levers to about halfway. Continue moving through your home, turning on the hot and cold water levers on all of the faucets. Do the same for showers and bathtubs. Flush every toilet in the home once or twice and put a cup under the water dispenser of your refrigerator, pressing the dispenser lever until you've retrieved one or two full cups of water from the unit.

3. Wait for about two minutes, leaving all of the faucets and spigots turned on. This allows the water pressure of the system to force all of the air from the pipes and out through the faucets. Once the water is running from all outlets without disturbance, turn off all of the faucets and spigots.

Tips Warnings

Turning all of your faucets on only halfway, rather than all the way, ensures your drainage system can handle all of the water during this procedure.
