Prime A Starite Shallow Well Jet Pump

Use a Sta-Rite shallow well jet pump to get water and skip the labor.

A Sta-Rite shallow well jet pump pulls water from a well, pressurizes it and feeds the pressurized water into a household plumbing system. Shallow well pumps must be primed before use to avoid serious heat build-up which can damage pumps in minutes and cause severe burns. Priming is also necessary for a shallow well pump to move water from the well into the house. The operation is quick and not terribly technical.

Instructions

1. Take the plug out of the priming tee at the top of the Sta-Rite pump by gripping the square head with adjustable pliers and turning counter clockwise.

2. Place a funnel into the opening. Pour clean tap water into the funnel from a bucket until the pump and all the connected pipes are full. The system is full when water begins to spill out from the priming tee.

3. Fill the suction pipe if there is a priming installed tee over it. Take the plug off the top of the suction pipe priming tee and pour water into it until it spills out of the opening.

4. Replace the priming tee plugs and tighten them firmly. Wait three minutes and turn on a tap inside the house. Shut off the pump, take off the plugs and fill with water again if there is no water flowing through the house. Trapped air in the pipes may cancel out the priming several times before the pump can hold pressure. Repeat the priming operation until pressurized water flows through the house.

5. Open a tub faucet and let the water run after the shallow well pump sends water into the house. Stand by the pump and listen for it to turn on and off at least twice to be sure the pump is operating correctly to maintain water pressure for the home plumbing.
