Fix My Antique Iron Bed That Is Wobbly

There are several ways to tighten an iron bed.

Many people toss and turn throughout the night. If every time you toss, the bed wobbles, it can arouse you or your partner from sleep. A wobbly iron bed frame and headboard is not just a nuisance, the noise created by the wobbling furniture can also be quite distracting. Many antique iron beds will begin to wobble due to loose hardware. This is a quick fix and only requires a few tools.

Instructions

1. Remove the mattress and box spring from the frame.

2. Remove the screws from the bed frame with a Philips screwdriver or wrench, one at a time.

3. Spray each screw with a water-displacing lubricant, such as WD-40. Then insert each screw into a washer.

4. Tighten each screw and washer back into its place on the frame.

5. Ensure that all screws are tight on the bed frame.

6. Check the frame for separated joints in each of the four corners. Apply metal glue to the joints that have separated and push them back together.

7. Center the box spring over the bed rails. Then replace the mattress and make sure it is centered on top of the box spring. This will take pressure away from the head- and footboard which could be contributing to the unsteadiness.

8. Check the bed to see if it is still wobbly. If it is still wobbly, there could be a problem with the bed frame legs or the floor.

9. Measure each of the iron bed frame legs to ensure that they are the same length, and make sure the floor is even. Legs that are slightly off-balance will cause the bed to wobble. Replace the bed or move the bed to another part of the floor to cure unevenness. You may also try placing a thin wooden shim under a leg that is higher off the floor than the others.
