Use A Sdhc Disk In A Nikon S60 Camera

An SDHC memory card offers additional storage to expand the capabilities of your S60 camera.

The Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) compact flash memory card can be used in cameras like the Nikon S60, one of the brand's popular Coolpix models, the same way a regular SD memory card is used. The difference between the two cards basically boils down to writing speed. The SDHC not only offers more storage space, but it has a faster write speed that allows improved image capture and transfer for high resolution photos as well as video footage without a drop off in quality.

Instructions

Inserting the SDHC card

1. Turn the power off on the S60 by pressing the power button located on the top of the camera. To confirm power is off, check to make sure there is no light visible on either the power button or the monitor screen.

2. Turn the camera over and locate the battery/memory card slot chamber on the bottom right side.

3. Use your thumb to gently slide the cover in the direction of the arrow to open the chamber.

4. Unlock the write protect key located on the side of the SDHC card by sliding the white notch to the off position. Insert the SDHC card into the memory slot, with the gold connector teeth facing the back of the camera until it clicks in place and is flush with the top of the slot.

5. Slide the chamber cover closed and power on the camera. Format the SDHC card by tapping the yes option on the monitor screen if the option appears when the camera is on.

Capturing High Resolution Images and Videos

6. Tap the "Home Screen" icon on the lower right corner of the camera monitor. This action can be done in shooting mode or playback mode when the camera is powered on.

7. Tap the icon of the action you wish to perform, such as "shoot" for photo options, "scene" to customize the shoot function to a specific set of indoor or outdoor lighting environments, or "movie" to begin capturing video.

8. Tap the "image mode" icon in the "shoot" menu to display a selection of image sizes that can be captured for photographs. The numbers indicate the potential output size of the photo in pixels times compression. The more pixels with less compression, the higher quality and size photo you can output, or print, without the image looking "grainy." The SDHC card is designed to capture the highest quality images (3648 x 2736) available from the S60. The default setting offers a high pixel count, but doubles the compression rate to allow more pictures to be stored, and is a good setting for the amateur photographer.

9. Tap the "movie" icon from the home screen, then "image mode" to set the output options for video shot with the S60. The SDHC card is designed to capture and write video with high aspect ratios (image size to compression) suitable for playback on high definition monitors (16:9, or 3,584 x 2.016) without losing quality or giving the appearance of stretching the video to fit the screen. Other settings include ratios for playback on regular TVs or computer screens. The computer (PC) screen setting (1,024 x 768) is suited for Internet upload to most social media sites.

10. Tap the "play" icon on the home screen to view photos or videos currently stored in the camera's internal memory or from the SDHC card on the camera's monitor.

Transferring Images and Videos From the SDHC Card

11. Lift the cover of the "AV Out" chamber, located next to the batter chamber on the bottom of the S60, using your thumb and slide it to the side to reveal the UC-E13 USB cable port.

12. The UC-E13 USB cable has a small end that goes in the camera and a standard USB end to connect to your computer.

Turn off the camera and insert the small end of the UC-E13 USB cable into the camera slot and the larger USB connection end into a USB slot on your computer.

13. Power on the camera and allow your computer to "find" the device. Once the camera is recognized as a connected device that contains data, a transfer options dialogue box will appear. Click on the action you wish to perform, such as import to editing software or other specified folder. You can also choose to manually open the device content folder and copy its contents wherever you desire, like a writeable disk. Unless otherwise specified in the transfer options dialogue box, the contents of the SDHC card will be erased once the information is transferred to your destination.
