Convert Atrac To Mp3 Format

First introduced with the MiniDisc format in 1992, Sony's Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding (ATRAC) audio format was used as a method to compress audio files for easy transfer and storage. However, not all audio devices are compatible with the ATRAC format, making an MP3 conversion desirable. Available through Sony's eSupport website, the free "MP3 Conversion Tool" makes converting non-DRM ATRAC files into MP3 files possible without the need of expensive audio software. In order to use the MP3 Conversion Tool, you must have the free SonicStage 4.3 music management software installed on your computer (see Resources).

Instructions

1. Download the "MP3 Conversion Tool" from the Sony eSupport website (see Resources).

2. Double-click on the file marked "MP3CONVERSIONTOOL.EXE" from the directory you downloaded the file onto during step one.

3. Click on the button labeled "Next" on the MP3 Conversion Tool software interface.

4. Click either "Find All ATRAC Files on My Computer" or "Convert All ATRAC Files in Selected Folders." Choosing the first option will only utilize files in the "My Computer" folder, while second option allows for conversion of files in other locations on your computer.

5. Modify the settings for the MP3 files you wish to create. The MP3 Conversion Tool allows you to choose the location for the file to be saved, the bit rate, the track name for the new file and whether you would like to keep the original ATRAC file or delete it.

6. Click "Start" to begin the conversion process. The tool will locate and convert files in the folders you have specified. Once the process is complete, click "Finish" to close the conversion tool.
