Portable Backup Devices

Losing data can be more than a setback.

Many computer users produce large amounts of digital data on a daily basis. There is always the risk of losing that data, which can be a devastating blow, so a regular backup regime is recommended. Component miniaturization has led to a flood of smaller and more portable backup devices appearing on the market. New products are introduced weekly to appeal to people wanting to protect their valuable photographs, video and other types of data.

USB Flash Memory Devices

These devices are typically similar in size to a cigarette lighter, with a USB connection at one end, often protected with a removable plastic cap. They are commonly available in 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB sizes. Some have ring clips, so you can attach them to something, and some swivel in and out of extended U-shaped protectors. You can pick up a name brand flash drive with 4 GB storage space for about $10, as of April 2011. With most modern PCs, simply plug the devices into an available USB port and the AutoPlay options window will appear.

Portable External Hard Drives

A name brand 320 GB portable external hard drive is about $50, as of April 2011. Drives with 500 GB or 1 TB, or terabyte, are increasingly common. The largest of these usually only weighs only a couple pounds or so. Iomega, Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi are key manufacturers. USB 2.0 is the usual interface and data transfer rates up to about 480 MB per second are common. Don't forget to eject your portable external hard drive in the correct way, using the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" routine, before moving it.

EZDigiMagic DM220 Portable Series

EZDigiMagic DM220 Portable Series products are portable CD/DVD burners that operate using either AC power or rechargeable AA batteries. The range includes models DM220-C24 and DM220-D08, both of which offer a one-touch backup tool. Model DM220-U08 has a USB host that allows you to back up photographs and video straight from your camera. There is also a version of the DM220-P08 model that includes a useful viewing screen. It has TV-out playback including infrared remote control.
