Replace A Focusing Screen

Replacing a focusing screen is possible, but is also challenging.

While focusing screens are interchangeable, it is not the same as putting a new lens on your camera. Changing a screen takes a some patience and enough dexterity to work with small tools and, depending on your model, you may need to work in some very confined spaces at awkward angles.

Instructions

1. Turn your camera off, and remove the battery and lens from your camera.

2. Locate the focusing screen inside the camera, just about all single lens reflex cameras have the focusing screens located above the mirror.

3. Using a small pair of tweezers, remove the metal clip which holds the screen in place. Depending on your camera, there is usually a small recessed or slot area to accommodate the tweezers, press the clip until it releases, and carefully remove the old screen. While you are removing the screen, take note of the way it was installed, as this will be the way the new screen has to go into the camera.

4. Hold the new focusing screen with tweezers. The screen will have a small protrusion that is designed to be used for handling.

5. Carefully install the new screen in the same orientation as the one that was removed from the camera. Care must be taken at this step, too much force may damage its holder and clips. Once the screen is in place, use the tweezers to secure the clip holding the screen in place.

6. Use a blower brush or compressed air to clean out the compartment. Replace the lens and the battery and your camera is ready to use.
