What Are Bullet Cameras

Bullet cameras are also called lipstick cameras because of their size and shape.

A bullet camera is a small cylinder-shaped surveillance camera. Its size makes it ideal for security situations that require hidden cameras. Most bullet cameras have similar characteristics, but technological advances have added to their style and versatility.

Characteristics

Shaped like a shotgun shell, and also called a lipstick camera, a bullet camera is used in surveillance systems because of the versatility of its size and shape. Most bullet cameras are about 2 to 2.5 inches long, making them easy to hide in small spaces. They are suitable for indoor or outdoor use and come in a variety of models, including infrared and wide dynamic types, as well as wireless and hard-wired.

Types

Because of advances in surveillance technology, various types of bullet cameras are available, and they range in terms of appearance and purpose. Many models are now adjustable, making it easy to change the lens and focal abilities. Some have infrared technology that can detect and produce black and white images in dark areas. The inclusion of closed-circuit television applications with some models allows for surveillance of an area from any remote place. Also, some types can record color images, instead of black and white images, during the day and alternate to infrared mode when lighting issues occur.

Wiring

Some bullet cameras come hard-wired, while others are wireless. Hard-wired types have a cable connected that directly attaches to a TV, VCR or DVR. Although it has wires, it does not require local power for operation because it receives power from the same source as the TV, DVR or VCR. Like hard-wired types, wireless versions also connect to a cable, except the cable plugs into a wireless transmitter that is attached to the camera. A separate wireless receiver plugs into a power source, such as a DVR.

Disadvantages

Bullet cameras have many uses including as private surveillance equipment on residential property and as spy equipment for law enforcement agencies, but because of their size, there are some disadvantages associated with them. Their size limits them to a fixed focal length lens, which produces images with slight distortions, such as corners that are cut-off. Also, bullet cameras with infrared technology do not work well in areas with many reflective surfaces, such as windows and mirrors, because they cause the sensors on the camera to fail.
