Create Cheap Photo Studio Lighting

If you are a novice photographer, you know how fulfilling it can be to provide great pictures to family and loved ones. Once you've mastered the use of your camera take your pictures to a more professional level by adding studio lights to your shots. You don't have to spend a lot of money, and you probably already have some of the things you'll need.

Instructions

Gather Supplies

1. Take a look around your house, garage and attic to see what you already have on hand. Lights don't have to fancy to do the job. If you don't have the things you need they'll be easy to obtain.

2. Get a shop light or two to use as your main light. They are available at hardware stores and are essentially the same as professional hot lights. The price is significantly less at about $40 a pair. You'll need a couple yards of muslin fabric or a white bed sheet to hang in front of the light. This spreads the light out evenly and lights up the whole space.

3. Purchase a few yards of white muslin to use as a backdrop. The white color will contribute as a subtle light source.

4. Find a smaller shop light with its own stand to use as a secondary light source. Use your mirror to bounce this light back onto your subject or place a white umbrella behind the light.

5. Use a small clip on desk light to use as a hair light. If you need more directional light for this, fashion a cone from aluminum foil and fit it around the light with the small side facing your subject.
