Install An Xm Antenna

Installing an XM antenna in your home requires a bit more specific placement and adjustment than installing the car antenna. However, it shouldn't take long to establish a strong signal and get your XM radio working. You will be enjoying commercial-free music in no time.

Instructions

1. Find an appropriate window. You'll want to place your antenna in a south-facing window to best align with XM's satellites. For best reception, you want a window with a clear view of the sky. Make sure that there are no branches or obstructions in the way.

2. Connect the antenna cable to your XM receiver's antenna in jack.

3. Turn the receiver on and look for the satellite signal strength indicator on the top left or right corner of your screen. Your receiver may also have a separate menu selection to view a larger signal strength indicator.

4. Fine tune. Adjust the antenna placement as needed to achieve the strongest signal. The antenna may be able to pick up a signal through the wall or roof, without necessitating window placement. Test it out to see what works best.

5. Mount the antenna. The XM antenna comes with a flat base which can simply rest on a window sill, entertainment center or other level surface. Alternately you can mount the antenna to an interior or exterior wall using the screw holes on the underside of the base.

6. Once you have mounted the antenna in the appropriate place, run the cable to your receiver in a neat fashion to keep it out of the way. Run under a carpet, behind the entertainment center or along the molding. Your antenna should have come with 20 feet of cable, and 50 foot extension cables are available for longer runs.
