Install A Photoelectric Sensor On An Outdoor Light

Outdoor lighting sold at home improvement stores sometimes comes with extras like sensors that pick up motion or turn on the lights at dusk. These built-in sensors save you the trouble of remembering to turn the light on and off and give you peace of mind with some extra lighting and security at home. If your outdoor lighting did not come equipped with a photoelectric sensor to turn your lights on at night and off in the morning, you can pick one up at a home improvement store and install it on your own without wiring or major electrical work.

Instructions

1. Flip the switch to turn your light off. You do not need to disconnect the service, but it helps to not burn your hand on the bulb.

2. Get into position so you can access where the light bulb sits. Using your screwdriver or pliers, open the housing and remove the light bulb.

3. Take the sensor out of its packaging and insert it into the light, screwing it in like a light bulb. Make sure that you screw it in tightly with the sensor facing out so that it can detect light.

4. Screw in your light bulb.

5. Reattach the housing for the bulb. Your bulb may not fit because the sensor takes up between 1/4 to 1/2 inch between the original socket and the base of the bulb. If you find that you cannot reassemble the housing of the lamp, you will need to purchase a bulb that is smaller in size (but not necessarily in wattage).
