Repair Filter Threads On A Camera Lens

Camera Lens

The most common reason a filter will not attach to a camera lens is when the filter ring is dinged or bent out of round. The basic principle behind repairing this ring is to bend it back into a perfect circle so that the filter can attach properly.

Instructions

1. Scrap wood can be used to build the lens support.

Draw a semicircle from an undamaged portion of the exterior of the camera lens onto the wood support board. Cut out the semicircle and file it smooth. The lens will rest in this support, with the damaged area facing the support board, while you tap the filter ring back into shape.

2. Shape your lens filter ring into the desired shape.

Round a narrow piece of wood or dowel to the arc of the interior of the lens. This punch needs to be long enough to be able to tap with a hammer, without the hammer hitting the lens.

3. Place the lens, with the damaged portion of the filter ring down, on the support board. Have your helper stabilize the other end of the lens to keep it from moving.

4. Use a long enough punch so you don't accidentally hit your lens.

Place the weed punch against the bent portion of the filter ring. Gently tap the punch with a hammer to bend the filter ring back into its original shape. Experiment with the force needed, working your way up toward more forceful hits of the hammer.
