Though most audio bugs are now digital, audio tapes may still be used for surveillance.
Detection of tape recorders in counter-surveillance operations runs along similar lines to any other method of bug detection though it may require specialized equipment. Generally, in the world of digital and wireless technologies, tape recorders are no longer used by sophisticated law enforcement and security agencies. They are larger than normal audio bugs and have limited power supplies. On the other hand, because of their increasing rarity, tape recorders may be harder to spot since you are not looking for them in the first place. To ensure thorough counter-surveillance, keep on the lookout for tape recorders.
Instructions
1. Obtain suitable equipment for tape recorder detection. Consider purchasing a specialized bug detector for locating a tape recorder. For example, Granite Island Group sells a number of devices that may be of help. Their 2059H handheld tape recorder detector detects decks through their bias oscillators. However, not all tape recorders use bias oscillation. In this case, a Doppler stethoscope may be advisable. The device generates a small amount of radio energy to penetrate soft-side materials such as an attach case in order to detect the movement of tape recorder motors. For more general counter-surveillance work, the CPM-700 probe and monitor may detect tape recorders as well as other common audio and video bugs. (See the "Resources" section for links to specific products.)
2. Conduct a "routine" sweep of your home, office and automobile. Look for any places in the walls or ceiling where a tape recorder could be installed. Locations that look freshly painted or plastered deserve additional scrutiny. Windows are also easy targets since they do not require an actual break-in for installation.
3. Secure the perimeter of your home and office. The best counter-surveillance is preventative. Consider purchasing a security alarm system such as ADT to ward off intruders. Counter-surveillance may also be established through your own surveillance if you have the budget. For instance, a camera surveillance system may be able to detect intruders on your property. Also, beware of any strangers who try to enter your home or office. Phony telephone repairmen and meter readers are often employed to install surveillance equipment.
4. Keep vigilant. Perform frequent "sweeps" of your work and living quarters. If you want to be extra careful, change your travel patterns regularly such as when you leave for work and how you get there. Unpredictability will make it harder for someone to set up bugs --- including tape recorders --- in your absence.
