Convert a Digital Negative in Photoshop
Most consumer-level digital cameras apply some manipulations to your image before saving it as a .jpg file on your memory card. These manipulations include sharpening, increasing saturation and noise reduction. Some photographers prefer to have more control over their images, and save their files to their memory cards as unedited Raw files. These Raw files are the digital equivalent of film negatives, and can have file extensions like .nef, .crw, .dng or any one of a number of other proprietary formats. Though Adobe Photoshop cannot natively open these types of digital negatives, Adobe provides a plug-in to include Raw file support.
Instructions
1. Go to the Adobe Downloads page to download the latest version of the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in. Make sure you are downloading the correct plug-in for your version of Photoshop and operating system. You can also consult the list of supported camera types to ensure that yours is on the list.
2. Press the "Proceed to Download" button to start the download of the Adobe plug-in.
3. Launch the application once it has finished downloading. The application will automatically look for the latest version of the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in and install it into Photoshop. Make sure your version of Photoshop is closed before running the installation application.
4. Open Photoshop and access the Adobe Bridge by clicking on "File" in the toolbar and selecting "Browse."
5. Find the image file you wish to open in the explorer menu, right-click it and select "Open in Camera Raw..."
6. Click "Done" in the pop-up window if you only want to convert the digital negative, or you may set your development preferences in this window.
7. Open the "File" menu and choose "Save As." Select your preferred image format from the "Format" drop-down menu and click the "Save" button.
