Convert Cassette Tapes To Cd With A Walkman

Hook up a Walkman to an amplifier and computer with CD burner to convert cassettes to discs.

The Sony Walkman cassette player was a portable audio device introduced in the 1980s. The personal stereo played cassette tapes through a set of headphones. Some models were also equipped with an AM/FM radio. Using an old Walkman to convert cassettes into CDs requires additional hardware to burn the discs. A computer or laptop with a CD burner takes care of the recording. The Walkman must be connected to an amplifier, which is then hooked up to the computer, to provide enough power for an adequate audio signal for recording.

Instructions

Connect Components and Convert the Cassette

1. Insert the plug on the Y-adapter into the Walkman headphone jack and connect the two plugs on one end of an audio cable to the two jacks on the Y-adapter.

2. Insert the plugs on the other end to a set of stereo input jacks on the amplifier.

3. Connect a second set of audio cables from the amplifier's output jacks to the sound card jacks on the back of the computer tower.

4. Open the recording software on the computer by double-clicking the name of the program.

5. Insert a cassette tape in the Walkman, rewind if necessary and press the "Play" button on the device.

6. Click the "Record" button on the audio software to copy the content on the cassette. Click "Stop" when finished recording and select the "File" tab.

7. Click "Save As" and type a name for the cassette recording. Then select "Save as WAV" and click "Save" to store the recording on the computer.

Burn the CD

8. Open the computer's media tray, insert a blank CD and close the tray.

9. Open the software for the CD burner, such as Windows Media Player on a computer running a Microsoft platform, or iTunes on a Mac.

10. Click the "Burn" tab on Windows Media Player or "Create New Playlist" on iTunes. Then click the "Music Library" tab and select the cassette recording from the list of audio files.

11. Click and hold the left mouse button on the selected recording. Then drag the file to the Burn or New Playlist column and release the mouse button to drop the recording in the column. Repeat with as many audio files as desired. A "Time Remaining" message at the bottom of the screen shows how much recording time is available.

12. Click "Burn" to record the converted content from the cassette to the CD.
