Make A Computer Pick Up A Wireless Signal

You won't need hard-wired cables anymore -- you're going wireless!

A computer capable of picking up a wireless or Wi-Fi signal can potentially log on to the Internet any time it gets near a Wi-Fi signal. Some wireless signals such as those found on some airlines and in libraries are not secure, which means users can connect without a password or login name. Essentially, if your computer is Wi-Fi enabled, there are many possible ways to connect to the Internet, whether you are on the go or at home.

Instructions

1. Install a wireless networking adapter on your computer.

To install an adapter a desktop computer, power down the unit. Open the case with a screwdriver and insert the card in an empty slot of the appropriate size. Close the computer case. Turn on the computer. Windows will detect the new card and begin installing.

Newer laptops usually come with wireless networking capabilities. However, if you have an older laptop computer, install a wireless USB network adapter.

Put the installation CD in for the adapter and go through the screen prompts to install the software. Connect the USB adapter to a USB port on the back of your computer. Windows will detect and install the hardware.

2. Look for the Internet networking icon in your task bar represented by two small computers. Mouse over the icon to find out if a wireless network is available.

3. Click "View Available Networks."

4. Connect to the network that interests you. You'll need a password and login for most, but if you are near a cafe or other public place, you may pick up an unsecured wireless connection.
