1. First, assess the damage done to your television. If you can see the damage, how serious is it? For example, if the screen is cracked or has a hole in it, this may be a costly repair, and you'll probably want to consider purchasing a new television. If you cannot see the damage, figure out how the damage affects your TV. This might help you determine what the problem is. Problems that tend to be worth repairing include damage to the remote control, damage to the buttons on the front of the television, reception problems and input problems, such as loose or broken cord jacks.
2. Consider the age and style of your television. If it is more than eight years old, it is probably not worth repairing, as normal wear and tear probably caused it to break down. Likewise, if it is not a flat-panel television, it may make more sense to just purchase a new or used television since repairing a CRT television is extremely costly these days.
3. If you still want to pursue fixing your television, call a local TV repair shop and describe the damage. It may be able to assess the repair cost on the phone, providing you with a quote. If you cannot describe the damage, bring your television into the store and have staff give you a free assessment and a quote.
4. Compare the quote you received with television prices. You can check weekly fliers from electronics stores or the Internet to determine how cost effective it would be to get your TV repaired in contrast to buying a new television. You can also consider using a resource such as Craigslist or eBay to buy a used television. This way you might be able to get a working product for a fraction of the cost.
