Know The Capacitor Size For An Amp

Capacitors are electronic components comprised of two conductive terminals divided by a dielectric insulator. Capacitors hold and store electrical charges; the components are used in electronic circuits in devices such as stereo amplifiers. A typical amplifier has many different-sized capacitors mounted on its circuit boards. If a specific capacitor goes bad -- and requires replacement -- it must first be properly identified.

Instructions

1. Unplug the amplifier's power cord. Unplug all cables running to the back of the amplifier.

2. Remove the screws on the back of the amplifier's case. Lift the case off the amplifier.

3. Touch the ends of the resistor to each of the ends of the capacitor. This discharges the capacitor.

4. Plug in the soldering iron and melt the solder connections. Pull the capacitor loose from the circuit board with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

5. Read the value on the side of the capacitor; it is usually marked clearly. Replace the capacitor with one of the same capacitance rating.
