TV rabbit ears is a commonly used term for a television antenna. These antennas are very effective for receiving free over-the-air broadcast television signals. TV rabbit ears are intended for indoor use. However, in many cases they can receive a signal that is just as clear as an outdoor antenna.
Types
TV rabbit ears come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Typically the device comes with two straight antennas, which capture very high frequency (VHF) signals which are broadcast on channels 2 through 13. There is a second round loop antenna which captures ultra high frequency (UHF) signals which are on channels 14 through 83. There are both powered and unpowered antennas. Powered antennas amplify television signals. Unpowered antennas only pick up television signals.
Features
TV rabbit ears pick up free over-the-air television signals and transfer them through a coaxial cable to a VCR or television set. Powered antennas come with an adapter. Some rabbit ear antennas come with a dial which you can use to adjust the signal boost. Typically, the more energy a powered antenna uses, the clearer the television picture it is able to produce.
Benefits
Having a powered antenna is most beneficial for most television viewers, since it can boost a weak television signal. In many cases, you can get a cable-quality picture with a digital tuner and a powered television antenna. Even if you have cable or satellite service, you can avoid additional charges by using an antenna to get your local stations. You can also reduce your monthly television charges by using antennas on your spare television sets instead of cable or satellite receivers.
Misconceptions
Many salesmen will tell you that your old TV rabbit ears won't work with digital television. The truth is, analog antennas are more than adequate to pick up digital signals. You do not need an HD antenna to get good over-the-air digital television reception. However, if you're having serious problems with your old antenna, or you must constantly adjust it to get a good picture, an HD antenna may be a good investment. An HD antenna may improve your signal even if you don't have a high definition set. Also, you do not need an antenna on any television that is connected to cable or satellite service.
Considerations
In order to get the best digital television reception with TV rabbit ears, place the antenna high up on a wall using a shelf or bracket. Test the antenna location to see how well it receives signals before installing any fixtures in the wall. After February 17, 2009, all analog television signals will have ceased. From that moment forward, all broadcast television will be digital. If you are still using an analog television set, you must use a digital converter box to receive free over-the-air television signals with an antenna.
