Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries are the factory default battery used in most Sony camcorders, including the DSC S85. While lithium ion batteries are high quality, durable batteries, some consumers prefer other battery types for reasons of availability, cost or simple personal preference. Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are another common battery choice with consumers. NiMH batteries that substitute for the Li-Ion battery for the DSC S85 are available to consumers.
Li-Ion batteries
Lithium Ion batteries are rechargeable. They hold a charge for a longer period than NiMH batteries when on a shelf, making them suitable for items such as cameras that see periods of heavy use followed by long periods of storage. They also tend to have a long useful life and are convenient, as they already come with the camera.
NiMH batteries
NiMH batteries are rechargeable, are generally less expensive than their Li-Ion counterparts, charge more quickly, hold a charge longer when in use and are currently easier to find in stores or online shops. As Li-Ion batteries gain more market, the cost and availability advantages will diminish or be lost, but certain consumers will always prefer the more familiar NiMH versions.
Alternate
There is a replacement NiMH version of the Li-Ion battery for the DSC-S85 camera. It is a universal battery replacement, which means it can be used for multiple models of camera, and can be used with the charger for the DSC-S85. It can be obtained through battery specialty shops or large electronics retailers.
