Designing the most rugged camera is the latest battle in digital camera technology. Pentax and Olympus have both released tough, point-and-shoot cameras designed for adventures: the Pentax Optio W90 and the Olympus Stylus-Tough 8010.
Against the elements
The Pentax Optio W90 is designed to be waterproof (20 feet), shock-proof (4 feet), cold-proof (for sub-freezing temperatures) and dust-proof. The Olympus Stylus-Tough 8010 is waterproof (33 feet), shockproof (6.6 feet), freeze-proof (14 degrees) and crush-proof (up to 220 pounds).
Specs
The Pentax Optio W90 is a 12.1 megapixel camera with a 28mm, wide-angle lens and a 31X zoom. It captures videos at 720p HD quality. The Olympus Stylus-Tough is 14 megapixels, has a 28mm lens and records videos at 720p. Both cameras have a 2.7" LCD screen for playback.
Size
Both cameras are designed to be light and sturdy. The Pentax weighs in at 5.1 ounces without the battery, and the Olympus is 7.6 ounces without the battery. The Pentax model is slightly larger, at 4.2 inches to the Olympus' 3.9 inches. Both cameras use rechargeable lithium ion batteries.
