Many Japanese girls enjoy taking purikura photos.

Purikura is a specific type of photo booth that is popular in Japan. These machine take photos just like a regular photo booth, but with some notable exceptions. The back of the booth has a green screen, which allows you to choose a background for your image. The greatest appeal of these booths, however, is the ability to digitally decorate your photos with fun or silly items and words. Depending on the model, Purikura machines operate somewhat differently and have varied options, but require the same general process to use.

Instructions

1. Locate for the coin slot which is usually on the outside of the purikura machine, but may be on the inside. Insert the required coins. Purikura machines are usually timed, so remove any items that you do not want in the picture, like a coat or backpack, before inserting your money.

2. Go inside the purikura booth and close the curtain. There will be a screen inside that you will use to make your decisions about your photos.

3. Choose your theme, brightness and backgrounds or frames. You can select specific themes and backgrounds which are displayed in picture examples on the outside of the machine, and all machines have slightly different options.

4. Pose when you have finished making your choices. You will be able to make several different poses. The screen inside the booth lets you know when to pose and when to change using a countdown timer.

5. Choose which poses you want to keep and which you want to discard.

6. Exit the booth. Some booths use the screen inside for decorating photos, but most new booths have the decorating screens on the outside so that more people can use the booth.

7. Decorate your photos. Purikura machines often use timers, so you may have a limited amount of time to choose different additions to your photos. You will see a selection screen that allows you to choose different items or words, and you will have a pen you can use to draw directly on the pictures. Decorate each pose as desired.

8. Choose how many pictures you would like to print. All print sheets are the same size, but you can print different numbers and sizes of photos.

9. Press the print button and retrieve your photos. The photos will be on a small sheet that needs to be cut apart. Most purikura photos are printed on stickers.
