Troubleshoot Aiwa Stereos

Never insert a cassette with unwound tape exposed.

An Aiwa compact disc (CD) stereo contains at least two speakers, dual cassettes, a CD player and an AM and FM radio. The second tape deck serves to make copies of other tapes and CDs and record material from the radio. After the unit is set up, you might run into a few setbacks with power loss, CD malfunction, radio reception, cassette sound quality and speaker connection. Each can be remedied with simple maintenance.

Instructions

1. Grasp the body of the AC power cord plug and pull it from the wall or strip outlet to reset the connection, if the stereo has no power. Inspect the cord for damage, such as dents, cuts, tears or frays. If the cord is damaged or exposed in any way, replace it. Plug a separate electric device into the outlet to test the outlet for proper functionality. Unplug the device and plug the Aiwa stereo system back in.

2. Push back the tabs of the speaker terminals on the back of the Aiwa stereo system to loosen the speaker wires and pull the wires from the terminals, if you experience a sound outage. The speaker wires might be wired incorrectly. Inspect the wires for damage. If the wires show damage, replace them. Confirm that the wire tips are exposed and stripped enough to clear the terminal without including any of the rubber casing. Insert the white wire or the wire with the white stripe of the right speaker into the "+" terminal of the "R" speaker column and close the tab. Insert the black wire of the right speaker into the "-" terminal of the "R" speaker column and close the tab. Repeat these steps for the left speaker and the "L" speaker column.

3. Rearrange the location of the Aiwa stereo system's FM and AM antennas to gather better reception, if the radio sounds distorted. Confirm that the FM antenna is mounted to a wall and the two ends are spread out into a "T." Move the unit away from electronic appliances with strong signals, such as microwaves or TVs.

4. Press the "Eject" button on both the Aiwa system's tape decks to open the cassette doors, if the tape sound is poor or skimpy on the highs. Dip a regular cotton swab into denatured alcohol and gently clean the parts of the cassette player at the bottom of the tape deck, including the play head, which is between the two pinchrollers and captstans.

5. Push the "Eject" button on the Aiwa system's CD changer or CD player and remove the CD, if the CD fails to play when the "Play" button is pressed. The CD might be inserted upside down. Inspect the CD for damage or grime. If the CD is dirty, use a soft cloth and CD cleaner to clean the CD. Wipe from the center to the outer edge. Reinsert the CD with the label facing up and the playable side facing down.
