Make A Dvd From An 8mm Tape

Preserve your 8mm memories with a DVD.

The 8mm tape format was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. These tapes were smaller and lighter than the standard VHS or VHSC tapes that were common back then. The problem nowadays is accessing those old 8mm memories. One way that you can do this is by making a DVD from your 8mm tapes. By capturing your 8mm tapes into your computer, you can edit out embarrassing moments and fix overexposure and lighting problems. Then you can export it to a DVD that you can enjoy on your TV or laptop.

Instructions

1. Insert the 8mm tape into your video camera. Ensure that the video camera has RCA and/or SVHS outputs on it. The RCA jacks are colored yellow (video), white and red (audio).

2. Connect the camera to your computer. Since the 8mm camera is an analog device, as opposed to a miniDV, it will have to be converted before it will capture properly. Connect the analog ports on your 8mm camera to a conversion box plugged into your DV card.

3. Start your video capturing software. Ensure that your capture device is set to the analog conversion box. You can check this in the "Settings" menu of your video capture program. Once the device is set, choose "Import" or "Capture."

4. Start your 8mm tape device. Watch the preview window in your capturing software. Allow the tape to play through the part that you want to capture. When finished, press "End Capture" or the "Stop" button in your capture program, and then stop the 8mm tape device.

5. Use your video editing software to make any cuts or transitions needed in your footage. You also can add titles and adjust the sound levels.

6. Insert a blank DVD into your DVD player.

7. Export the finished movie to DVD. How this is done depends on your program. Some capture programs allow you to do this from their main menu. In other programs, you will have to export your final edited movie, and then start up a DVD authoring program and import it into that.
