Set Your Camera

There are common camera settings you can make before you take a photo.

Cameras come in many brands and models that vary in the functions they offer. It is important to set your camera properly if you are going to take great photos. There are common digital camera settings you can make before you shoot. Experience on set a digital camera for different situations will enlighten you and make you a better photographer.

Instructions

1. Check your camera's "Exposure." This is how much light hits the picture. Look at your camera's LCD screen and make your shots darker or lighter. Press "+/-" buttons to make the adjustments.

2. Consider your camera's "White Balance." This is the quality that takes into account the relative warmth (orange) or coolness (blue) of white light and helps in attaining realistic color casts in photos. Adjust camera settings to the correct estimated preset white balance when you are in artificial lighting. Set to "Fluorescent," "Daylight," "Cloudy" or "Flash" to prevent appearance of blue, orange or green color casts that damage the quality of photos. "Auto White Balance (AWB)" is the default white balance in most digital cameras that uses guess algorithms to achieve the best color casts under ordinary daylight.

3. Fine-tune your camera for correct color saturation and contrast. Adjust the "Fine Tune" control buttons for different photos shots.

4. Adjust the ISO settings usually displayed at the LCD's top rear of most Canon digital 400D and SLR digital cameras. ISO settings determine how sensitive the image sensor is to light. Common ISO settings are 100, 200, 400 and 800, depending on the camera model. Set ISO speeds to a low number whenever possible because the higher the ISO number is the more grainy a photo will look.

5. Set your digital camera to save photos in the best file format. Save files in JPEG, TIFF, RAW or a combination of these file formats. Use the JPEG format to compress photos and shrink file sizes, TIFF for high quality images that are not compressed and RAW for photos with no adjustments whatsoever.
