Use The Nikon D70s Digital Slr Camera

Discover new ways to use your D70s.

Learning use your Nikon D70s takes a little manual reading and a lot of fun experimentation. The D70s is a 6.1 megapixel digital SLR that made its debut in the mid-2000s. This upgrade from the D70 has several shooting modes including automatic, manual, shutter preference and aperture preference for experienced amateur photographers. One of the best ways to learn your camera after conquering the basics of turning it on and snapping a photo is to go through the modes, adjust the settings and take multiple photos.

Instructions

Using AUTO Mode

1. Turn your camera on by flipping the power switch (located on top of the camera on the right side when looking at the LCD screen) to the "ON" position.

2. Put the dial mode (located on the top of the camera on the opposite side of the power switch) to "AUTO." "AUTO" mode automatically adjusts the camera's settings and produces optimal results in most instances. Also ensure the camera is in auto-focus mode by flipping the focus-mode selctor to "AF."

3. Push the shutter down halfway to auto-focus. The camera will beep and you will see a light in the viewfinder when the camera has focused on a subject. Push the shutter all the way down from the halfway position to take the photograph.

Learning New Methods

4. Adjust the white balance settings by going into your shooting menu and selecting the "White bal." option. Choose the white balance that most closely resembles the lighting you are shooting in. White balance controls color contrasts so that white objects appear white and not to be bluish, greenish or orange-ish.

5. Switch your focus-mode to "MF" for manual focus. Gently play around with your lens while looking through the viewfinder to check out how your D70s focuses on different items. Zoom in on a subject and focus on it and then zoom out and take the picture.

6. Turn the mode dial to "M" for manual. In manual mode, you will control shutter speed and aperture instead of the camera doing it for you. To adjust shutter speed, rotate the main dial (located on the back of the camera) while in "M" mode. For aperture, rotate the sub-command dial (on the front of the camera).

7. Review your photos by entering the playback menu (marked by the universal "PLAY" button sign, a sideways triangle pointing right). You can view photos in thumbnail mode, or zoom in on individual photos to review your work. You can also delete photos from this area.
