Install A Cd Changer With An Fm Modulator

A CD Changer is a great way to organize your CDs

A CD changer is a convenient way to listen to your CDs in your car, without having to change CDs during a commute. With most changers you need a certain deck that will plug directly into the CD changer. This means if you have a "Sony" CD changer you would need a "Sony" deck with CD changer controls. Now if you want to keep your factory deck or have a deck that doesn't have CD changer controls, you can always hook up a changer with your existing deck using an FM modulator to pick up the signal through your FM stereo.

Instructions

1. Choose a location to mount the changer. Putting it under the front seat may be the most convenient spot for both access to the changer and the install. If you have no room under the seat, the trunk will do just fine. Most changers come with adjustable mounts that will allow you to install the changer horizontally or vertically. Make sure your changer is mounted in a place that gives you access to the "magazine" that holds your CDs. Make sure there is room to eject the magazine.

2. Run the cable for your changer to the dashboard. If your changer is under a seat, run the cable under the vehicle's carpet to hide the cable. If you are installing the changer in the trunk, most vehicles have a hole or a crevice you can sneak the cable through. If not, you can drill a hole from the trunk to the backseat and then run the cable under the carpet. connect the cable to the changer, and then run the cable all the way from the changer to the back of your deck.

3. Disconnect your car's negative battery lead from the battery. The black battery lead represents negative polarity.

4. Remove your deck and locate the antenna cable. Unplug the antenna cable from your deck.

5. Select an ideal place on you dashboard for the FM modulator. Make sure the modulator is close enough to the deck to run the antenna cable from the modulator back to your deck.

6. Plug your antenna cable into the modulator's "Antenna In" connection.

7. Connect the modulator by plugging in the lead marked "Antenna Out" to the "Antenna In" on the back of the deck. This will be the same input that you disconnected the antenna cable from earlier.

8. Run the two power cables from the modulator. One lead will need to go to a constant source of power and the other one will be hooked up to a switched 12-volt source.

9. Attach the black ground wire from the modulator to any clean metal on your car. You can secure the ground wire by just screwing it down to the metal.

10. Re-install your deck. Keep the cable that has the CD changer display unit on it loose, coming out of the bottom of your dash.

11. Find a location on your dash to mount the display unit. The unit should be near the driver, with controls such as disc and track selection on the display unit within view. The easiest way to mount the display unit is to use Velcro tape to secure it to your dash. Make sure the cable is out of your way, so you won't get it tangled in the pedals or the steering wheel.

12. Re-connect the negative battery lead to your vehicle's battery and test your system
