Transfer 35mm Slides To A Video

Transferring 35 mm slides to video is not difficult, but you'll need a working slide projector. If you don't have a working projector, you'll need to purchase a commercially available transfer device. Using a transfer device will not significantly improve the quality of the transfer, but cleaning the slides before you begin can significantly improve their appearance. Ultimately, the quality of your transfer will depend upon the quality of your original slides.

Instructions

1. Put your slides in the order you wish to present them. Place as many slides in slide carousels as possible before you begin. Even if you plan to edit your presentation later, organizing the slides now and photographing them in the order you plan to use them will save you a great deal of time later.

2. Set up the slide projector. Position the camera and screen, or white projection background, so that slides will clearly project onto the screen. Avoid making the image too large or too small. Set the camera slightly in front of but to the side of the projector, avoiding the creation of a shadow. Make sure you have plenty of tape or card capacity. If you plan to narrate, attach an external microphone.

3. Organize the presentation. Determine how much time you want each slide to appear on the screen. Prepare any narration ahead of time to avoid long pauses. While you can add the narration and even a music track later, reading narration during the taping session will help determine how long the sides should be onscreen.

4. Recruit an assistant. While a slide transfer is possible without an assistant, having one person advance the slides and turn the camera on and off while another reads the narration can ease the process.

5. Videotape your presentation. Once you are organized and have made assignments to your assistant, you can press the record button and begin the taping process. You can pause after each slide to avoid the flash of the projector changing slides, or you can run the tape continuously. Advancing the camera and projector with their remotes will facilitate a smooth transition.
