XLR connectors are immediately recognizable in the world of audio. You find XLR connectors most often on microphones and microphone cables. XLR connectors are also used for sending a balanced signal to a mixer or speakers. Here are some things to keep in mind when you buy XLR connectors.

1. Figure out if you need to buy a male or female XLR connector. Unlike several cables that have male connectors on both ends, XLR cables typically have a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other. This means you also need to be aware of what gender the connector you want to plug into is. Microphones typically have male connectors and speakers have female connectors. Mixers and soundboards have female connectors, while some external hardware may have male connectors.
2. Buy solder-free connectors if you do not have a soldering iron or do not want to mess with soldering. Solder-free connectors often cost a little more and they may not have the same quality as soldered cables, but the convenience may make it worth it for you.
3. Consider an angled connector if you need to plug in somewhere that a standard XLR barrel doesn't fit. Right angle XLR connectors come in both male and female, and they can be a space saver in a cluttered area.
4. Make sure you get an XLR connector with the right number of pins. Usually, you will want a 3-pin XLR connector, and many people have never seen XLR connectors with a different number of pins. There are certain applications, though, that use 4-pin, 5-pin or another number of pins for XLR connections. Verify before you buy.
5. Pick up any other tools you may need to connect the XLR connector. Make sure you have a soldering iron and enough solder, clamps and pliers.
