Connect My 8mm Sony Camcorder To My Computer

Use a Firewire cable to connect Sony digital 8mm camcorders to a PC.

Sony 8mm camcorders are available in two categories: older, analog-cassette video cameras and camcorders that capture video onto digital tape. The cable connections for hooking up to a computer are different on each camcorder. The older variety uses RCA-type composite AV cables, while digital tape models connect with a Firewire cable, also known as an IEEE 1394 cable. Either connection takes only a minute.

Instructions

Connect Sony 8mm Analog Cameras

1. Turn off the camcorder and open the protective flap covering the AV jacks on the side of the unit by inserting a thumbnail under the flap edge and lifting it off.

2. Insert the colored plugs on one end of the composite cables into the matching color jacks on the Sony camcorder.

3. Connect the plugs on the other end to the jacks on the video card on the back of the computer tower.

4. Turn off the camcorder and open the protective flap covering the Firewire jack on the side of the unit by inserting a thumbnail under the flap edge and lifting it off.

5. Insert the plug on one end of the Firewire cable into the port on the camera. The plug inserts in one direction only, so don't try to force it into the port.

6. Connect the plug on the other end to a Firewire port on the computer, typically on the back of the tower.
