Wireless Home Security Camera Work

Introduction

Wireless home security cameras are used as the eyes and ears of the homeowner when he is not at home. Wireless cameras have become increasingly popular because of their efficiency, easy installation and improved quality. The advancements in digital technology are just one of the reasons that homeowners are opting for wireless cameras. The fact that the prices of the device have dropped significantly over the past few years is also positive motivation for consumers.

Connection and Power

A base unit is used to communicate with the other wireless components associated with wireless security cameras. The cameras connect to the base by a radio frequency being sent out. They work similarly to TV sets at home picking up the reception of local networks.

For power, the base unit usually plugs into an electrical socket. Each camera is equipped with a 9V battery for a power source. Monitors and any recording or output device connected to the receiver will either run on electricity or batteries, depending on the brand.

Installation

The main benefit for choosing wireless security cameras is the easy installation. Once the cameras have established a connection to the base unit, or receiver, they are ready to be operational. With wired cameras, extensive work has to be done on the structure and wiring on the home just to connect the cameras to inside wiring. Additional wiring would have to be installed so that the receiver is able to display the images and/or sound that come from the cameras. With wireless cameras, the hardest thing is drilling in the screws to the brackets that hold the cameras in place.

How They Work

The placement of the cameras needs to be planned out so they have a viewing range that covers all of the most valuable access points in the residence. One of the main problems that people have with home security is not knowing where to place devices. Having the cameras pointing to the main doors is a good place to start, but they also must be near rooms with the most valuable items, since it is not guaranteed that intruders will use just the front and back doors to enter the home.

Before placing the cameras, the base unit needs to be plugged in and a connection to the cameras must be established. The base communicates with the cameras by sending radio waves on wireless frequencies. Using the brackets, the cameras are attached to the walls or ceilings in the desired locations. Once power is supplied to the cameras and base unit, images and sound are transferred from the cameras to the receiver. The receiver outputs the cameras' playback to a connected monitor, TV, VCR or DVD recorder.
