Definition Of A Paging System

Paging systems can be public address speakers or personal devices.

The ability to get in touch with someone remotely via a paging system is an important advance that technology developers have enabled. It makes a difference in business, in crowds and on an interpersonal level.

Business Paging

Nurses and doctors rely on pagers for information and communication.

A workplace paging system is a valuable asset, especially when communication is an integral part of the day-to-day business. Grocery stores, for example, rely on intercom communication for their operational success; employees use the paging system to ask for help in the checkout lines or with bagging groceries.

"White collar" workplaces also feature paging systems as critical components, as conference calls and telecommunications play major roles. Coordination of these calls is often done through a page.

Hospitals also rely on paging to relay information to doctors and nurses regarding patients. In a National Center for Biotechnology Information journal article titled "Challenges to Physicians' Use of a Wireless Alert Pager," the authors illustrate the importance of pagers in staff communication and notification.

Crowded Venues

Contacting one person among thousands is possible through public address speakers.

Anyone who has gotten separated from a group in an airport or at a sporting event or concert can attest to the importance of making contact immediately with that group. Public address systems are a massive form of paging in a crowded environment. Bruce Borgerson of the Sound and Video Contractor calls this form of paging "one that is designed to pierce certain environments with necessary information." Often one person can use a paging system to find someone in a crowd or to inform the crowd of important information.

Interpersonal Paging

The personal pager often provides only a call-back number.

The cellular phone is a ubiquitous form of telecommunication today, but some still rely on the interpersonal page. Personal pagers usually provide no more than a contact number or short message, but are considered valuable for that alone.
